SANDY COVERAGE
US-Tropical-Weather-Sandy
Hurricane Sandy's outer bands pummeled the Eastern Coast on Monday with howling winds, torrential downpours and storm surges that authorities warned could bring devastation unlike anything anyone has seen.
Tropical-Weather-Transportation
For much of the Northeast, travel isn't an option today. Airline and ground transportation systems in three major metro areas have ground to a halt as Hurricane Sandy zeros in on the East Coast. More than 10 million public transit commuters are without service. Here's what to expect in New York, Washington, Philadelphia, on the railways and in the sky.
US-Tropical-Weather-State-By-State
States up and down the East Coast are bearing the early brunt of Hurricane Sandy, which started to turn toward the United States on Monday. The Category 1 hurricane's center is expected to hit land tonight. Here's a look at how coastal states are dealing with the storm:
US-Sandy-Bounty-Ship
Three people washed off their crippled ship and engulfed by Atlantic waters roiled by Hurricane Sandy scrambled for help on Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard said, but only one of them made it to safety. When the HMS Bounty's crew members realized their lives were in danger off the North Carolina coast in the dark morning hours, they made a short journey they hoped they'd never have to take -- to two waiting life rafts. But only 13 of the 16 people aboard got off the ship safely, initially, and only one of the three washed overboard made it into a raft, Coast Guard Vice Adm. Robert Parker told CNN. The two missing crew members face "extraordinary conditions" in the frenzied ocean where rescue efforts intensified, Parker said. The survival drama involving the sailing ship and its stranded crew played out 90 miles off the Atlantic Coast churned by Sandy's fury.

Beyond the driving rain, howling wind, closed schools and canceled flights, Hurricane Sandy evoked fear among East Coast residents battered by other storms in recent years. People hunkered down in homes and shelters with emergency kits at the ready Monday, unsure of what will happen when the huge storm reaches shore from Maryland to Connecticut and collides with a cold front over New England. Memories of last year's Hurricane Irene, with flooding and falling trees that killed unsuspecting victims, further unnerved longtime coastal residents who watched storm surges top sea walls and wipe out docks in the hours before the full brunt of Sandy was due to hit.
