A prosecutor has ordered officials to transfer former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak back to a prison hospital, a spokesman said.

"A team of doctors and medical consultants conducted a full checkup on Mubarak on July 4 and submitted a report that he is well enough to return to the prison, where he will continue his sentence," Adel Saeed, the general prosecutor's spokesman, told CNN.

Saeed said the prosecutor sent a letter to Egypt's Interior Ministry and prison authorities "to transfer him as soon as possible and provide him with the proper medical facilities and attention in the prison hospital."

Mubarak was taken from Tora prison by helicopter to a military hospital in a Cairo suburb last month.

At the time, conflicting reports emerged over the leader's health, with Egypt's state news agency reporting that he had been declared "clinically dead." Officials and Mubarak's lawyer denied that claim, saying that Mubarak's health was deteriorating and he was in critical condition, but still alive.

Mubarak's health had been reported in decline since he was ousted as president of Egypt in February 2011 and found guilty of charges related to the killings of hundreds of anti-government demonstrators during the revolution.
