Three horses were found dead in Stephens County Sunday night.

According to the Breckenridge Sheriff's Department, the three horses were found dead in a locked pen.

The department is investigating to determine the cause of death. The department currently speculates the horses died from either heat exhaustion or lack of water.

The sheriff's department is interviewing the horses' owners to find out what happened and to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed.
