POSTED: 4:15 pm CDT September 1, 2010UPDATED: 9:47 am CDT September 2, 2010ABILENE, Texas -- The race for governor is just a few months away and a debate is scheduled in October between the two gubernatorial candidates - incumbent Rick Perry and Bill White. Governor Perry has refused to attend it until White discloses his tax records.
People we talked to all said they want to see the two debate to find out where both men stand on issues. Some believe White's missing tax records aren't the issue, while others agree with Perry and think he's hiding something. A debate will go on with or without Governor Perry being there.
Perry is refusing to debate former Houston Mayor Bill White until he shows his tax records from the mid-90's, when he was Deputy Energy Secretary.
Abilene resident Jay Rea said, "I still have my tax records from the 90's. He's in politics, he has them should be able to produce them. Another resident, Jack Chamberlain said, "I agree with Perry let him furnish those tax returns he has he's willing to debate and I'd like to see him debate.
While others say that's not the issue. Debbie Mace said, "I don't think that should matter. Debate is hearing what's all about now, not what they did in the past, what they're gonna do in the future but what's your stand on something right now, today?
In the latest Rasmussen poll Perry is ahead of White 49 to 41%. 7% of Texas voters are still undecided.
The Texas newspapers and television station that invited them say they'll still hold the event if Perry doesn't show.
They'll just talk about the issues with White alone.
