Hundreds of Texas school districts are suing the state over financial issues and nearly 20 Big Country schools have joined the lawsuit.

Many of these districts are outraged that the state slashed $4 billion from education funding, so they are putting their foot down so this does not happen again.

“We had to stand up for our kids," Max Thompson, Rising Star ISD Superintendent, said.

Rising Star part of the Texas Taxpayer and Student Fairness Coalition, who is suing the state.

“Unless we change target revenue and go to a better system that will bring in more dollars, that's the reason for the litigation,” Thompson said.

Many superintendents said the school funding system is unfair, inefficient and unconstitutional. Rising Star administrators agree.

“We have all these cuts and yet school districts continue to do what they can for kids and try to meet standards and standards continue to increase,” Thompson explained.

Although Rising Star lost out on about $200,000 this year from state funding, they were one of the fortunate ones who did not have to cut any positions.

“This school district's school board has been very frugal and had a fund balance to live off and now it's come time to cash in on some of those savings,” Thompson said.

Sending money from their emergency funds could cost the district in the coming years.

“We're going to have to make some substantial decisions in this next year and that's because of the financial system that the legislature has adopted,” Thompson said.

Thompson thinks this is a winnable case. He believes it is time to start holding our legislators responsible for their decisions.

Here is the list of Big Country schools that are part of the Texas Taxpayer and Student Fairness Coalition who are suing the state:

Anson ISD, Hawley ISD, Coleman ISD, Stamford ISD, Lueders-Avoca ISD, Rule ISD, Haskell ISD, Blanket ISD, Brookesmith ISD, Zephyr ISD, Santa Anna ISD, Rising Star ISD, Dublin ISD, Miles ISD and Olfen ISD.
