'West Side Story' on its way to Abilene
Abilenians will soon have front row seats to the Broadway musical, West Side Story.
The Abilene Cultural Affairs Council has teamed up with Oklahoma-based Celebrity Attractions to bring a series of Broadway shows to the Abilene Civic Center.
"It's one of the most classic Broadway shows of all time," ACAC Broadway Series Director Kimmy McNiece said. "The dancing is incredible. It's going to have all the original score from 'I Feel Pretty' to 'Maria and America' so I just really think it's going to be an enjoyable overall show from the dancing to the music to the acting."
If you enjoy romantic musicals with a twist, West Side Story may be the show for you.
"It all kind of started with gang violence that was going on in New York and the writer was inspired by the story of Romeo and Juliet so he just translated it into a modern day kind of romance, conflict story," McNiece said.
Cooper High School graduate Jeff Smith stars as Snowboy.
"I just think it's really incredible we have such high quality shows here in Abilene without having to travel to Dallas or New York to see such a quality production," McNiece said. "Plus, I think the Abilene community is very invested in the arts and it's nice to have something special to do every now and then."
West Side Story will be at the Abilene Civic Center Wednesday, Jan. 23.
