State officials say there were 388 fewer traffic fatalities in 2009 than in 2008.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is pointing to public safety campaigns about seat belt usage and drunk driving as one of the reasons for the decline.

Trooper Sparky Dean with the Texas Highway Patrol says there are more positive statistics about Texas' driving record, "Also the great news is Texas now has a 93.8% almost a 94% compliance rate with their seat belt law, that's one of the highest in the nation and you have to be excited about that."

Trooper dean recomends using common sense while driving to continue to the decline.

Motorcycle accident deaths were also down from the previous year, by 19 percent.
