UPDATED: 11:16 am CDT June 1, 2011
A freight train derailed in Brownwood near Howard Payne University, spilling four empty cars near the intersection of Coleman and Center streets, just south of HPU.

Brown County Sheriff's Department deputies said the derailment involved four empty rail cars, and no injuries were reported.

The incident occurred near the Truman-Harlow Underpass about 3 a.m.

By 8:30 a.m., both street traffic and the railroad tracks were cleared for normal traffic. The four derailed cars will remain in the area for a few days, a spokesman said.

The Sheriff's Department spokesman said it is unclear what caused the derailment, and the cause was under investigation.
