Online College Classes Help Boost Summer Enrollment Numbers

Summer enrollment at Abilene universities is close to where it was last year.

Hardin-Simmons University's summer enrollment is down a little from last year, but Abilene Christian University is up by 100 students.

Jim Jones, Hardin-Simmons Associate Vice President for Enrollment Services, told KTXS there are different reasons why people attend summer school.

“Students use it primarily to get ready for graduation or make sure they get all the classes they need to graduate on time,” Jones explained.

He added that some people like to take advantage of summer classes to fix past mistakes.

“Some students are kind of picking up some slack where they may have had some difficulties in other classes and they need to get back in good shape,” Jones said.

Kevin Campbell, ACU’s Enrollment Officer, said that more students lean towards taking online classes.

“Taking a summer online course enables them to still be a part of the ACU community, but be back home, maybe work or do an internship,” Campbell explained.

Since the amount of courses that are offered during the summer is significantly smaller, ACU, HSU and McMurry Universities are all part of the intercollegiate agreement, which allows students to take classes at each other’s campuses.

“Some of our students will go take a course at Hardin-Simmons in the summer, or McMurry and we get quite a few students from Hardin-Simmons or McMurry taking courses here as well,” Campbell said.

ACU’s summer classes wrap up on August 4th. Hardin-Simmons' last class day is August 11th. McMurry’s last day is August 12th.
