About 500 acres burned Friday afternoon just north of Maryneal, about 13 miles south of Sweetwater in south Nolan County. Rough terrain has been making it difficult to fight the blaze. The Texas A&M Forest Service as well as local fire departments have been battling the blaze.
The fire burned a railroad bridge that was on a portion of the old Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway which dates back to 1907. The rail line was still being used to haul freight to and from the Buzzi Unicem USA Maryneal cement plant and a rail yard in Sweetwater.
As of 11 PM Friday, the Texas A&M Forest Service reported the fire was 30% contained.
