7 Big Country high school marching bands qualify for UIL state contest

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Congratulations to all of the Big County high school bands that earned a trip to the UIL State Marching Band Contest.

For the first time in its history, the Clyde High School Marching Band is one of those schools getting ready to head to the Alamodome in San Antonio for the competition.

“I think we're all just so excited and so happy,” said drum major Elizabeth Dugan. “I think for some of us we haven't even totally realized yet, wow, we are going to state. We've done such a good job.”

They found out they qualified at the area competition Saturday in Amarillo.

“Everybody was jumping around, screaming, crying,” said Jordan Browning, the band president. “It was emotional ... I cried, personally. It was just insane.”

They've done well and won plenty of awards before, but this trip to state is a first for the Bulldogs.

"We’ve never had an honor like this, period,” said Bruce Morgan, the band director.

Now comes the fine tuning.

“[We’re] being very, very nit-picky,” Morgan said. “This morning we talked about one foot angle being less than 15 degrees from everybody else's. We had one student with his left arm just a little bit off. We adjusted that.”

They'll perform a medley combining classical with classic rock -- competing against 20 other 3A schools across Texas who also made the cut.

“I'm excited to see us rise up to the occasion of state,” Dugan said.

Clyde will find out who wins at 10 p.m. Nov. 7.

The contest is Nov. 6-8 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
