ABILENE, Texas -

Abilene Regional Airport will see more upgrades soon -- all part of a $6.7 million federal grant.

The Abilene City Council agreed Thursday to match 10 percent of the funds, clearing the way for the airport to start the projects.

Taxiway and ramp improvements have been underway at Abilene Regional Airport for several months.

Don Green, director of the Abilene Regional Airport, said work will be done on another main taxiway.

The taxiway has numerous cracks and needs to be widened to meet standard guidelines.  Taxiway lights will also be changed to more energy efficient and longer lasting LED lights.

"It's very important," Green said. "This is something we expect to last another 30 years or so."

Green said plans are to also use the grant money to repave one of the runways. Officials hope to do that sometime next year.
