ABILENE, Texas -

While traffic safety is always important, it's especially crucial when it comes to the well being of your children.

"The issue is child safety. You know, we love our kids and we want to make sure they are safe going to and from school," said George Spindler of the Abilene Police Department.

That means obeying the rules of the road, one of which clearly states that it is illegal to pass a school bus when children are loading or unloading.

"The law states that you have to stop and you don't pass a bus when the red flashing lights are on," said Spindler.

Once the extended stop arm comes out, you must stop or you're at risk of a citation.  Police are urging drivers to be aware, don't stop too close behind a bus, and pay attention to the time of day.
The most activity happens early in the morning and between three and four in the afternoon.

"We have to be prepared during the school year to be safe drivers at all times," said Spindler.

Following school zone traffic laws could save a child's life.
