ABILENE, Texas -

The Abilene City Council voted Tuesday to join Abilene ISD in supporting a petition urging lawmakers to rethink standardized testing for public school students.

A petition has already been filed with the in Austin.

Mayor Norm Archibald addressed the council before it passed the resolution.

"Education is our biggest partner in the city," Archibald said. "So many people will tell you as education goes so goes the community."

Ten other Big Country school districts are also part of the 600-district, statewide coalition in favor of re-examining the effort.
