ABILENE, Texas -

Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge issued a statement Friday about the arrest of paroled Abilene murderer Wayne East and the stabbing death of an Abilene man late Thursday.

“Several media partners have contacted me and asked for comments concerning the arrest of Wayne East in Dallas County. Today I visited with the Taylor County Sheriff and confirmed that Wayne East is in custody as reported. Media reports indicate this stems from another criminal offense, possibly involving a child. I have no knowledge of this new offense, but if true, I am saddened that another victim has been traumatized. The Abilene Police Department will cooperate with any law enforcement agency to ensure violent felons are identified and successfully prosecuted.

“I am also saddened by the death of another citizen in our community. Last night’s murder of an Abilene resident, and the stabbing of a second resident, causes me great concern. Our thoughts are with the families of these victims. The Abilene Police Department is committed to the safety of this community, and last night’s events remind me of the value of our first responders and dispatchers. I am incredibly thankful for the police staff who have worked diligently to ensure justice was pursued for the victims of these crimes. From the initial 9-1-1 calls, to Patrol’s capture of the suspect, to the Detectives thorough investigation, these staff members have worked many hours to serve this community. I encourage all of us to combat crime in Abilene, as we work together to build a community of the highest quality for present and future generations. “
