ABILENE, Texas -

Authorities have identified the driver who died in a fiery crash on State Highway 36 in Taylor County last Monday.

According to the Department of Public Safety, 30-year-old Jacob Morgan was driving a 2007 Chrysler northbound on the highway just before 5 p.m. July 16 when the accident happened.

Troopers said Morgan's vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree before coming to rest in a creek bed. His vehicle then caught fire and authorities were not able to identify the driver or even the make of the car until Tuesday because the wreckage was so severe.

Morgan's body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office for identification.  According to DPS, Morgan was from Fort Hood. He was pronounced dead at the scene by an Abilene justice of the peace.

The road was dry and the weather was clear at the time of the accident. DPS is still investigating the crash.
