These days budget cuts from the government come as no surprise. It has affected many departments, including the park department.

State funding for parks was taken away at the beginning of this year. Now, however, the Brownwood Parks Department is eligible for some money.

"This is the first year -- that I know about -- the state has really cut the funding for their grants," said Parks/Recreation Director David Withers.

Recently the federal government issued money to the state, and now a grant is available that the Brownwood Parks Department will be applying for.

"That will go toward our soccer complex that we're building, and if we're lucky enough to get the grant, it should be around $100,000," Withers said.

The new soccer complex will be on Milam Drive near the baseball complex. It will allow Centex Soccer and Soccer for Fun to use the same facility, Withers said.
