A 27-year-old man has pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter in the death of a Houston police officer who was struck and killed on a freeway while investigating a traffic accident last year.
Johoan Rodriguez faced up to life in prison in a punishment phase that began shortly after his guilty plea Monday.
A jury will decide his sentence after prosecutors and defense attorneys couldn't agree on one.
Prosecutors said Rodriguez's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he drove around police barricades at the scene of another wreck.
The Houston Chronicle reported that prosecutors said Rodriguez had been driving about 90 mph for a mile with a patrol car behind him with its lights on.
Officer Kevin Will, a 38-year-old father of two whose wife was pregnant, was killed instantly.
