ELECTION 2012: McAuliffe snags Republican nomination for Taylor County Justice of the Peace
Mike McAuliffe walked away with the Republican nomination for Taylor County Justice of the Peace Precinct 1, Place 1 over Lydia Long.
With 60 percent of the vote in the runoff, McAuliffe is hoping to fill Judge Bryan Smith's spot, who is set to retire.
"I'm very flattered, very pleased and very happy. It feels pretty good. I'm very flattered that the citizens of Abilene had this much confidence in me and I will make them proud," McAuliffe said.
McAuliffe is a longtime officer with the Abilene Police Department who spent more than 20 years as a school resource officer.
Across town, Lydia Long gathered with her friends and family, and even though her total votes came up short she said she has enjoyed the experience of running for office.
"This has been one of the best experiences I've ever had. It's just been so much fun. I worked my tail off, and I've met so many nice people in this community and had so much support. I appreciate everybody that came out to vote for me," Long said.
