Free formal dresses available to prom parents on a budget in Abilene
This is about to be a very expensive time of year for parents of some high schoolers.
It's prom season, and over the next few weeks, hundreds will be spent on hair, makeup, dresses and tuxedos.
Annessa Williams is a mom who's been "promed by surprise." She's looking for a dress for her son's girlfriend after just recently learning that he, a sophomore, and his girlfriend, a junior, are going to prom. It's definitely an unexpected expense.
"When you get at the cost of prom shoes, car, dinner, corsages, makeup, hair, it's really costly, especially when you're already kinda on a budget, so I just love this program," Williams said.
The program is called Queen of Dreams, and all these dresses are available for free, to anyone in need. The service is the brainchild of Daisy Jane Bergeron. Just one year ago she put out the call, asking women to donate used, but still very nice, formal dresses. In turn, any woman needing a dress, whether it be for prom, a wedding, or a special evening out, can come choose one and borrow it for free.
"Whatever their circumstances are, we don't know, but they are very grateful when they come in and they leave with a beautiful dress and some of them are brand new; they have tags hanging off them," Bergeron said.
"I can't wait for my son's girlfriend to get over here because they've got some really nice dresses!" Williams said.
The Queen of Dreams dress program is open to anyone in need, no questions asked.
