Grieving during the holidays: how to find hope and encouragement
The holidays are quickly approaching and for most people, it really is the most wonderful time of the year. But for those experiencing grief of any kind, it can be the worst.
Fun, family traditions like carving the turkey and opening Christmas presents aren't necessarily things that people in grief are looking forward to.
"What people are experiencing is very normal," said grief counselor Adina Brown.
Feelings of loneliness and magnified during the holidays, but members of the Abilene community are offering hope and encouragement.
"In knowing that other people are going through it, there is hope to know that you are not alone," said Brown.
Judy Osborne of Hendrick Hospice said that part of what makes the holidays so hard are all the expectations.
From having a clean house to prepping the perfect meal, all the stress can actually add to feelings of grief.
"Slow things down," Osborne said. "Don't feel like you have to keep up the pace. Do what you need to do to say comfortable and at peace during this time."
Osborne said it's also important to make your needs known to your family and that if skipping the holidays is what you need to do this year, that is okay.
