HASKELL, Texas -

According to the sheriff's department, Forrest Lewis Hatley, 26, of Rule, escaped around 1:30 p.m.

"He ran down the stairs and ran out the doors and they lost sight of him one block south east of the courthouse,"said Haskell County Sheriff David Halliburton.

Hatley was appearing at the county courthouse for sentencing when he escaped custody. He was found by authorities around 4:30 p.m. under his house in Rule. Halliburton told us he didn't put up any resistance and said he was unsure how Hatley got a ride to Rule.

"There was no indication that he notified anybody so it might have been just an innocent person picked him up and gave him a ride," Halliburton said.

Halliburton told us Hatley has a history of burglary and stealing cars. His sentencing was for burglary of a building.
