A 48-year-old Hawley man was killed and a 58-year-old Hawley man was injured in a motorcycle-car crash early Wednesday in Jones County.
The accident occurred about 5:55 a.m. on U.S. Highway 83 at Country Road 484 north of Hawley, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Killed in the accident was Gerhardt "Chip" Wesley Sugar, DPS said. He was pronounced dead at Hendrick Medical Center at 7:03 a.m. by Dr. David Patterson. Sugar was driving a 1990 Yamaha motorcycle.
Injured in the accident was Ramon Yanez-Aguilar, who was driving a 1984 Chevrolet Camaro, DPS said. He was taken to Hendrick Medical Center and is listed in Good Condition. Yanez-Aguilar reportedly was wearing a seat belt.
According to DPS, Yanez-Aguilar was “driving a 1984 Chevrolet Camaro eastbound on County Road 484, attempting to cross the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 83 … Sugar was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 83 … Yanez-Aguilar failed to yield right-of-way at the intersection. The Yamaha motorcycle ran into the Chevrolet Camaro.”
“The weather was clear and the road was dry,” the news release said, noting the crash is under investigation by Trooper Gilbert Valdez.
