History made: Two women promoted to sergeant in Abilene Police Department
For the first time in the Abilene Police Department's history, two women have been promoted to the rank of sergeant.
A special ceremony was held Wednesday afternoon for Sue Belver and Aron Brvan to honor them.
Applause filled the room when Belver and Bryan were pinned. The two women said they are happy to receive the promotion, but being women has made the process more of a challenge.
"I think female or otherwise it takes hard work, dedication, loyalty," Belver said.
Their devotion to the department paid off, although there were definitely obstacles to overcome, Bryan said.
"It was nerve-wracking at points during the classes," Bryan said. "It's a very humbling experience."
Belver's father, Earl, drove from San Antonio to see his daughter make history.
"I'm very proud of Susan," Earl Belver said. "I know she's worked very hard to get where she is."
Bryan has been working for APD since 2003 and Belver since 1995. Women in the Abilene Police Department are one step closer to achieving a higher rank.
"I hope it encourages the rest of them to try for it," Bryan said.
The Abilene Police Department’s first female hires occurred in 1977.
