January is National Train Your Dog Month
Stephanie DeYoung and her husky mix Cisco visited KTXS on Friday to talk about National Train Your Dog Month.
Cisco is a therapy dog with the Hendrick Pet Therapy Program. He has participated in Children's Miracle Network Telethons over the years.
DeYoung trains dogs and puppies through Pawsitive Pet Training & Services in Abilene. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, or APDT.
The APDT designates January as National Train Your Dog Month to bring awareness to the importance of socialization and training, and to inform the public that training your dog can be "simple and fun."
January was selected because many dogs and puppies are adopted during the holiday season, then surrendered by owners who don't know how to deal with their behavior.
DeYoung has partnered with the City of Abilene Recreation Division at the Cobb Park Recreation Center to offer a variety of dog classes. Classes include "Puppy Kindergarten," "Beginner Obedience," and more advanced classes. DeYoung has 15 years of animal and zoo training experience.
