From a San Angelo Police Department new release:
At about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, San Angelo police officers were called to Wal-Mart, 610 W. 29th St., to investigate a report of a suspected shoplifter. A responding San Angelo police officer was assaulted by the suspect while attempting to take him into custody.
Prior to arriving at Walmart, responding SAPD Officer Caroline Jackson received information from dispatch that the suspect, later identified as Visente Mendez III, 28, of San Angelo, was observed by Walmart staff as cutting open boxed merchandise with a knife and concealing the contents in his clothing.
Once inside the store, Officer Jackson quickly located Mendez. Having prior knowledge that Mendez was armed with a knife, Officer Jackson attempted to take Mendez into custody before he could use the knife against her or a member of the public. During the apprehension, Mendez resisted and assaulted (punched) Officer Jackson in the head before running towards the exit in an attempt to flee. Officer Jackson was able to run after Mendez, taking him to the ground and into custody without further incident. Walmart Asset Protection staff assisted Officer Jackson during the incident. While assisting Mendez to his feet, some of the suspected stolen merchandise fell out of his clothing. Additional stolen items were also located during a search of his person.
Mendez was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and charged with Robbery and Assault on a Public Servant.
Officer Jackson did not require medical attention as a result of the assault.
