The Myra P. Martinez Elementary School opened Wednesday. The school is located at 1250 Merchant Street and parents nearby were excited to get a look at their children's new learning facility.
"We passed by everyday and we'd see the progress of the building so it was really neat to see it come to fruition," said Monica Denise Mayes. Her five year old will be attending the new elementary school this fall.
Elementary school staff and city officials invited the public inside Wednesday while they dedicated the school to former teacher Myra P. Martinez.
"You have to have good infrastructure, but more importantly you have to have great teachers. But when you combine those two, as Myra would tell you, you know that becomes a game changer and a life changer for those students," said Congressman Randy Neugebauer, (R), 19th District.
Martinez taught in Abilene ISD for seven years before she lost her life to lupus in 2004.
Classes at the new elementary school begin on August 27th.
"This is the first elementary they built in 20 years, it's state of the art and one of the first things we wanted was to deliver a first class educational system for our kids," said Neugebauer.
