Millions of dollars are being invested in building new homes around the south side of Abilene.
In 2011, 162 new homes were built in the Wylie District and only 28 were constructed in the Abilene School District.
The average value of a home in the Wylie District is $174,482. In the AISD it's $90,631.
This is another interesting number about new construction in Abilene, $9,989,825 was spent building new homes in AISD.
Millions more were spent on construction in the WISD $48,443,814 was the total amount.
These numbers made us wonder why the majority of homes were being built on the south side of town?
Mark Aldriedge, a custom home builder, has built a lot of homes in different areas. He is in the process of building a new home around the south side the area where homeowners are buying.
Aldriedge said the south side is seeing a lot of construction because of the amount of acreage it has to offer. Also, it's in the Wylie School District.
"Most of the new construction, builders are coming south because those houses are turning faster compared to going to the north," Aldriedge said.
Aldriedge said Wylie School District is also a 3-A school which makes it more attractive because it's a smaller size.
"I hear most Dyess Air Force people hear that the place to go is the smaller schools so they go to the south of town," Aldriedge said. "They can have views of the hills of Steamboat Mountain."
The average home price in the Mountain Meadow division is around $230,000.
