Multi-million dollar bus terminal may be built in Abilene
A multi-million dollar bus terminal could be in Abilene’s future.
The new terminal would house both CityLink and City and Rural Rides facilities and would cover approximately 133,000 square feet. The project would cost an estimated $12-15 million. The majority of that would go to the actual facility and administrative offices and $4-5 million would go to streetscape improvements.
CityLink currently operates out of a 112,000 square foot facility and Coleman-based CARR stores some buses in Abilene.
In 2002, the Abilene Metropolitan Planning Organization hired The Goodman Corporation to do a feasibility study on whether a shared terminal was necessary. Greg Goodman, vice president of The Goodman Corporation said, at that time, nobody was able to determine where to build the new terminal.
Recently, there has been renewed interest in the plan and CARR recently hired the corporation to do another feasibility study and to help get federal funding for the project.
“We found an even greater need for a multi-modal facility,” Goodman said.
The new terminal and administrative offices could be located at the corner of Plum and North Fourth streets if the necessary federal funding is made available. Goodman said he hopes to get as much as 80 percent of the project paid for by federal funding.
“A project like this has a great chance of garnering a lot of federal funding for support,” Goodman said.
An open house will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Council Chambers on the second floor of Abilene City Hall at 555 Walnut Street. Goodman said he and city officials look forward to feedback from the public.
“Increasing mobility in the area certainly helps the public in reducing traffic congestion, reducing pollution, it helps the public it helps the region so it's important for the public to know what this project is all about,” Goodman said.
