HASKELL, Texas -

A Homeland Security official retired after hundreds of illegal immigrants were released from jails around the country, due to possible government spending cuts.

Gary Mead's departure was announced just hours after the confirmed release of those detainees.

KTXS News asked Carl Rusnok, a north Texas based spokesperson for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, if any of the released immigrants came from the detention center in Haskell county, which houses illegal immigrants. He was unable to confirm if that was the case.

A spokesperson for the White House says the President was never consulted.

The illegal immigrants who were released are described by the White House as low risk and non-criminal.
