Police arrested a 50-year-old registered sex offender Thursday after he allegedly took photos of random women and children at Brownwood's Walmart, apparently often focusing on the clothed backsides of females as they shopped.

Johnny Lee Wright, of Brownwood, remained jailed Friday after being charged with improper photo or visual recording with intent to arouse or gratify and for tampering with evidence, according to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.

Wright admitted he was taking the photos for his sexual gratification, authorities said.

Deputies said they are also investigating possible possession of child pornography at his Melwood Avenue residence. Law enforcement said they were called to his residence after being told he had child porn on his computer. None was found, but the investigation continues.

During the investigation, authorities said Wright advised that he had a Micro SC card in his possession, which he handed over to a deputy. On that card, authorities said, there were multiple deleted pictures of females when they were inside Walmart, apparently taken without consent or knowledge.

In addition to admitting taking pictures of women at Walmart for his sexual gratification, authorities said Wright confessed to destroying another Micro SC card by chewing it up and spitting it out on the side of the highway. It also, authorities said, contained deleted images of women and children from Walmart.

Wright, a registered sex offender from Arkansas, previously was jailed for first-degree sexual abuse of an 11-year-old female relative, Texas Department of Public Safety records show.

Wright’s wife allowed law enforcement to search his home, where hard drives and files were seized.
