Sexual assault case of San Angelo man will not go to trial
A San Angelo man facing several counts of aggravated sexual assault and indecency with a child entered an open plea in court on Friday instead of going to trial. The plea entered applies to the first count of aggravated sexual assault only.
42-year-old Jeffrey Steadman was scheduled for a jury trial starting Monday, November 5. The open plea entered on Friday will skip the trial and put sentencing in the judge's hands.
The offenses Steadman is charged with happened in 2000 and 2001 in Taylor County.
The charges carry a 5 to 99 year prison sentence. However, the prosecution asked the possible sentence to be capped at 45 years.
Steadman's attorney asked for a pre-sentencing investigation.
The judge will rule on the sentencing in about 45 days.
