An accident involving six vehicles block Interstate 20 for part of the afternoon Sunday near Sweetwater.

The accident occurred at mile marker 256, 13 miles east of Sweetwater.

According to the Department of Public Safety, a vehicle was traveling eastbound on I-20 when it ran off the road and over-corrected. The car then veered into the median and flipped into the westbound lane of traffic.

This caused an accident with two other vehicles.

According to a witness, about 10 minutes later a truck pulling a trailer slowed down to avoid debris on the highway. That's when the truck was rear-ended by a second vehicle and then hit by a third, causing a separate accident on I-20.

In total six vehicles were involved in both accidents.

One person was taken by helicopter to an area hospital, and two others were taken by ambulance to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.

DPS told KTXS both east- and westbound lanes were expected to reopen after 4 p.m.
