In May the Metropolitan Planning Organization approved the allocation of millions of dollars to change two-way frontage roads to one-way in Abilene.
Thursday, the Texas Department of Transportation approved it's $1.9 million portion of the plan.
TxDOT said construction on frontage roads will not start until Fall 2013, but they said when construction is complete, driving on those roads will be safer.
Darah Waldrip works for TxDOT's Abilene District.
She said the money will help them with construction of two frontage roads in Abilene.
"Converting some frontage roads along 322 and U.S. 83 to one-way operation. Those frontage roads are currently two-way," said Waldrip.
Waldrip said having consistency on Abilene's frontage roads will help those getting on and off the freeway.
"Those frontage roads would really be safer if we converted them to one-way operation. The ultimate goal is to have consistency on frontage roads throughout the area," Waldrip said.
The entire project is expected to cost a little more than $8 million.
