Texas officials opposed to new federal gun control proposals plan to speak on the steps of the state Capitol during a pro-Second Amendment rally.
The event is one of many rallies planned across the country Saturday. They come four days after President Barack Obama unveiled a sweeping plan to curb gun violence.
In Texas, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson will give a speech, as will first-term state Rep. Steve Toth, a Republican from The Woodlands.
Toth has introduced a bill seeking to ban in the state any federal prohibition on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. If it ever became law, such a measure would violate the U.S. Constitution.
Hundreds of people have pledged online to attend the Austin gathering at "high noon." Some attendees have been encouraged to bring their guns.
