LAMESA, Texas (AP) - A West Texas mother wants a school district to fire an athletic trainer who used a school blog to say her son, who is black, should not have felt denigrated by a white student's racial slur during a football game.
Lamesa school district officials said Ray McCall's comments were out of line but he shouldn't be fired. McCall was suspended five days.
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports Vickie Williams alleges that during a September football game, her son got into an altercation with an opposing player after that player called him by a racial slur. Both Williams' son and the player were ejected.
While not identifying Williams' son, McCall used the blog to criticize the Lamesa student involved in the incident, saying the student should be "ashamed" to be black.
