It's official: We have a contested race for mayor of Abilene.
At noon Tuesday Abilene businessman Robert Briley announced his intention to run for mayor. Current Mayor Norm Archibald, who has served at the helm for 10 years, announced plans Monday to seek re-election in 2014.
Briley, a six-year city councilman and government graduate of Texas Tech University, touted successes the city has had over the years. But Briley also pointed to Dyess Air Force Base, saying we can learn a lesson from an Air Force that changes base commanders every two years.
"I'm ready and I'm capable of being the next mayor of Abilene," Briley said. "The second thing, as I talked to you over time I wanted to see what everybody thought. And, without any doubt, all of you said to me that it's time for change. And that's the reason that I'm going to be running for mayor."
The city election is Saturday, May 10. The last day to file to run for office is Feb. 28.
