ABILENE, Texas -

There's very good progress to report for a young man who awoke from a three-month coma. 17-year-old Cory Almanza is now moving his extremities, and showing progress after suddenly waking Sunday.

Thursday night, the former football player was visited by Abilene High Football coach Steve Warren.

Warren presented the family with a $3,000 check from the Texas High School Coaches Association.

Almanza was injured critically when the car he was riding in ran into a refuse truck in May. Two other teens were hospitalized but recovered quickly.

The money given today will be used to a buy a lift to allow Cory to use a new handicap accessible van, the down payment for which was also made possible by donations.

"We can get him out of the house some”, said Almanza’s mother, Ruby Flores. “Take him to the games and take him to the doctor.  Places that we need to go. I can't even describe my feelings.  My emotions are going crazy this week, everything is just awesome.”

Almanza is going to physical therapy and relearning how to use his arms and legs.

This is Almanza’s senior year at Abilene High.
