Abilene police: 7-year-old crash victim not restrained

ABILENE, Texas - Tuesday Abilene police said 7-year-old Jae-vion Christian, who died in an accident Sunday evening on Interstate 20 near Winters Freeway, was not restrained.

Christian's uncle said he wants justice for his nephew. He also wants to raise awareness about the importance of properly restraining children to help prevent other deadly accidents like this.

“Man, he was an awesome kid, first and foremost,” said Brandon Scroggins, Christian’s uncle. “He got taken too early.”

The accident happened when a Ford Mustang lost traction and hit the Lincoln Navigator Christian’s mother was driving, causing it to roll over.

“I'm still in a daze,” Scroggins said. “I'm like in a dream. Like this is not real.”

The crash report shows five children ages one through 11 were in the car at the time of the accident. It said at least two were not properly buckled in.

“We want to raise awareness and let people know, don't be naïve,” Scroggins said. “It could happen to anyone of us, so be prepared because one day you're here, and the next day you're gone.”

Two years ago, a 5-year-old girl died in a rollover accident on FM 600 near Lake Fort Phantom. Four children were in that vehicle. Police said no one was wearing a seatbelt.

The Texas Department of Transportation holds regular demonstrations about buckling up children. They also offer free car seat inspections and installations.

“You want to make sure if your child is eight years or younger or 4-foot-9-inches or shorter, that they are in the appropriate car seat or child passenger safety seat for their age and height,” said Mary Belle Turner, a public information officer with TxDOT.

Scroggins said Christian’s death is a reminder to parents about the danger on the road. His family reminds people that even the best of mothers can lose their children when they're not buckled in.

“She was very responsible,” Scroggins said. “She was a great mom, and don't nobody take that away her. She was an awesome mom.”

Police have not said if any charges will be filed related to Sunday's accident. They said it remains under investigation.
