Abilene Police: Man arrested after allegedly punching medic

At about 1:30 a.m. Monday, Officers James Davis and Brian Poynor responded to a disturbance call in the 2400 block of South 1st Street. Metro Care ambulance company had notified APD dispatch that one of their medics that had been assaulted by a male patient during a transport to a local hospital. Officer Poynor’s investigation revealed that the male subject was seeking medical treatment after being involved in a physical altercation with another male party earlier at approximately 1 a.m. at a residence in the 1800 block of Ballinger Street. The investigation further revealed that the male subject became uncooperative and combative inside the ambulance during the transport. The ambulance pulled over and the male subject unbuckled himself from the stretcher and went out the back door. The medic told the subject to stop and get back into the ambulance. The subject then punched the medic in the face with a closed fist. There were several witnesses to this assault. The medic’s injuries consisted of scrapes to his arm and a small cut to the forehead. The subject was arrested for felony Assault on a Public Servant.
At about 2:10 a.m. Friday, Officer David Humber responded to a disturbance call at the intersection of Antilley and Buffalo Gap Roads. APD dispatch had been notified by a man that eventual explained to police that he had two subjects leave his cab without rendering proper payment. A description of the subjects was provided by the cab driver to Patrol Division officers. Officers were able to locate the two involved parties in the 5600 block of Buffalo Gap Road. The investigation revealed that the male patron allegedly offered to pay the cab driver with marijuana instead of money. The male subject gave Officer Humber consent to search his person. During a search of the subject, a small bag of marijuana was located in the subjects pocket. The search further revealed a baggie containing several medications and another baggie containing crystal-like rocks. The medications were determined to be hydrocodone and the crystalline substance tested positive for methamphetamine. The outstanding cab fare matter was handled without further police involvement by the cab driver and the female subject. The male subject did not produce a prescription for said medications. The male subject was arrested for felony Possession of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine) and for two misdemeanor offenses: Possession of Controlled Substance (Hydrocodone) and Possession of Marijuana.
At about 11:55 p.m. Friday, Officers Kevin Pruitt and Jeremy Nell responded to a crash incident in the 1900 block of Beechwood Lane. APD dispatch had been notified by a few concerned citizens about the crash and their observations. One of the concerned citizens informed dispatch that the male driver of the vehicle was still on-scene and that his vehicle had collided with a trailer. Officer Nell contacted a male subject who was identified by a witness as the driver of a 2004 Ford Escape that collided with a parked trailer. Officer Nell smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from this driver. Officer Nell reported that the driver told him that the driver was intoxicated and that he was trying to move the Ford Escape. The crash investigation revealed that the Ford was traveling northbound when it struck the left rear portion of the parked trailer with the Ford’s right front-end. The trailer then struck another parked vehicle that was in front of the trailer. Both parked vehicles were unoccupied and there were no passengers in the Ford Escape. All three vehicles sustained minor damage. The driver refused to perform standard field sobriety tests and reported no injuries. A records check confirmed that the driver had two previous convictions for DWI. A blood sample was taken from the driver as part of the investigation. A records check further revealed the driver had an outstanding warrant under an alias. His identity was confirmed at county jail and the driver was arrested for felony DWI and for a probation warrant. This investigation continues.
