Abilene Speedway provides action-packed excitement

Abilene Speedway

ABILENE, TX - The roar of the engines can be heard from the quarter mile dirt oval just off of I-20 boulevard West, Abilene Speedway. The facility hosts a number of big events throughout the year like the ASCS Sprint Car tour, but track owner Rob Poor says they stay busy with weekly events.

"We have all our regular classes that race also every Saturday night." Said Poor. "We'll have probably about eighty to ninety cars tonight compete, and we do that on a weekly basis."

Modifieds, Sport mods, Street Stocks, and Stock Cars highlight weekly Saturday night racing, and regional sprint car driver Harli White says the venue provides action-packed excitement.

"It's pretty fun, its racy, it's real racy in the heat race and then it slicks off and gets kind of one lane around the bottom during the A-feature, but it's still racey. It's a lot of fun, and you know, a lot of fans enjoy it, they have a lot of fans that show up here, they have a lot more than other race tracks so, it's definitely fun," said White who finished in the top 10 on Saturday night.

Whether an avid race fan, or just a rookie, fans are encouraged to attend and see what dirt track racing is all about.

"If they've seen NASCAR on TV and they have a perception about racing and boring, this is just the opposite." said Poor. There's just something happening all the time, people are excited to be here, lots of action on the race track, and lots of good food and stuff to drink."

Abilene Speedway has brought many racers and fans alike to the Big Country, which boasts many benefits for the facility, and the city.

"Abilene benefits from the hotel rooms and the restaurants. People travel from Lubbock and San Angelo, and all through the metroplex just to come and watch this, not just participate, so Abilene benefits a lot and so does the speedway," said track owner Rob Poor.

So wheter you're looking for a different weekend activity, or just in the need for some speed, Abilene Speedway is the place to be.
