ABILENE, Texas - VFW Post 6863 in Abilene held a ceremony Thursday to mark the 76th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

On Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese Navy Air Service attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killing 2,403 Americans. The next day, the U.S. declared war on Japan.

“Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan,” said then President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The ceremony featured Mayor Anthony Williams and guest speaker Master Sgt. Ron Deos.

Deos is currently an Air Force Junior ROTC instructor and has taught at Cooper High School since 2004.
