4H Horse State Finals kicks off Sunday

ABILENE, Texas - The first cutting event for the 4H Horse State Finals began at noon in the Taylor County Expo's Center Coliseum.

Cowboys and cowgirls rode their horses and warmed up for the big competition. As many as 1,300 horses are expected to compete. This week marks Abilene's 29th straight year hosting the finals which runs through July 27th.

The show is a combination of competitive events with some aspects of a livestock show. 4H members will compete in about 30 events, none of which are designated by age.

"Pretend it's like any other day and then a little bit before you get on your horse you start thinking about what you gotta do to go in there and do your best," College competitor Sarah Kate Grider said.
