Abilene anti-violence group holds memorial for abuse victims

ABILENE, Texas - Stop the Violence, a local group that advocates against abuse, invited people to tell their stories during a memorial service Friday at Kirby Park in Abilene.

About a dozen people shared how violence affected them, and a candlelight vigil was held after.

Organizers said the event gave people the opportunity to speak out against violence.

"Our [Abilene police] chief says, 'We're the first line of defense,' that's the truth," said Lt. Gary Bone, one of the organizers for the memorial and an Abilene police officer. "What this is about is getting people organized and ready to step out and make a difference, rather than sitting back and complaining about all the bad things happening."

The same group will be holding a rally Saturday in downtown Abilene to address violence in the area.

The event will start at 10 a.m. and go until 3 p.m. It will be on Pine Street between North 2nd and North 3rd. Everyone is invited to attend.
