Abilene man drags officer during traffic stop

ABILENE, Texas - Thursday night around 10:30, Abilene Police Officer, Sterling Riddle was dragged by a man after a routine traffic stop.

Police say Officer Riddle attempted to stop 51-year-old Ennis Surratt for driving with no headlights as he traveled eastbound on South 14th near Butternut. While he was talking to Surratt at his window, police say Surratt grabbed onto Officer Riddle and dragged him for a short distance. Officer Riddle only sustained minor injuries.

A vehicle chase ensued and police say they had to use spikes to stop Surratt's car in 1700 block of Anderson Street. Police say Surratt had also thrown a beer bottle and marijuana out of his vehicle during this incident and also displayed indicators of intoxication.

He refused to perform standard field sobriety tests.  A sample of Surratt's blood was taken.  A records check revealed that Surratt had eight previous convictions for DWI. He was arrested on four separate felony charges: aggravated assault on a peace officer, DWI, evading, and tampering with evidence. This investigation continues.
