ABILENE, TX - Monday, the Abilene Christian University community grieved the loss of Lindsey Smith.
Prayers were offered in the morning chapel service, for Lindsey's family and five other ACU students who were injured in the Friday crash. The auditorium was filled with heavy hearts and hugs of comfort as faculty and friends looked to God for strength to bear this tragic loss.
Students, faculty and friends came together as one community, to pray for the families and victims of the car crash that killed ACU student Lindsey Smith, 20 of New Braunfels, and one Abilene man Jeffrey Davis, 27. Davis was the driver of the second vehicle. Smith was in the vehicle carrying six ACU students. The accident happened at the intersection of County Road 107 and Highway 36, just east of Abilene Regional Airport.
People leaned on each other, held hands and sang songs. The ACU flag flew at half-staff to remember Lindsey. Her friends remembered her as spunky and full of life.
"Recently, me and one of my other friends visited her while she was at Disney," said close friend Connor Vansteenberg. "We spent a whole four days there with her and that was the last time I got to spend a lot of time with her."
Another close friend said, "I think God is just reminding us how fragile life is and how thankful we should be that we were given three beautiful years together at ACU to really come together and be such great friends," said Erika Tanaka.
"She always wanted people to hang out," said Vansteenberg. "She always tried to get our group of friends together. I think she was kind of the glue."
In the meantime, this community will do what they know to do, rely on God and each other for strength.
Lindsey's friends and family and ACU Student Life department are planning a memorial event in Abilene.
The funeral for Lindsey Smith will be at 11 am in New Braunfels, Texas at Oakwood Baptist Church. The burial will be at 4 pm at Hill Country Memorial Park for family and close friends.
