Builders, stats: Taylor County homebuilding outlook good for 2013

Bright year predicted for home construction

2013 looks to be a good year for home starts in Taylor County.

Building permits issued in Taylor County for last year show a significant increase compared to 2011 – and local builders say they are enjoying the uptick.

Big Country Home Builders Association President Frank Langley has several homes under construction on Abilene's south side.

"There's been a huge growth from 2011 to 2012 – and I see it being a real positive transition this year. This is one of the few times I've been homeless ... I always have spec homes, five on the ground, and I don't have anything to sell or show 'em because everything's sold," Langley said.

He's not the only local builder who's busy.

"We can't build them fast enough. We have six under construction right now," Seymour Beitscher said.

He bought up the area off Highway 277 now known as Butterfield Meadows back in 2006. The development sat until 2010, when Beitscher built a handful of homes. But now, things are really moving.

"We've got six under construction, but we also have 34 lots sold to a major builder out of Lubbock and he's about ready to start," Beitscher said.

Numbers from the Texas A&M Real Estate Center are showing how busy Taylor County builders are.

Through just November of 2012, 220 building permits were issued for the year.  Compare that to 149 for all of 2011 – that's nearly a 46 percent increase in permits issued.

Langley said he believes it is growth the local economy will be able to sustain.

"Because we're not right on top of the oil boom that may be we'll just have substantial growth and get everybody working," Langley said.

Langley said the majority of people buying homes from him are either retired Air Force, working with area wind farms, or part of a growing medical community. Langley said he's also doing business with a significant number of people supporting the oil boom out west.

At  Butterfield Meadows, Beitscher said out of the original 113 lots he had available, he has just 52 left for sale.
