ABILENE, Texas - This week, the City of Abilene will hold its Spring Clean and Tire Amnesty days in an effort to help residents clear out their clutter.
The event runs from Thursday, April 10, through Saturday, April 12, at the Environmental Recycling Center on Oak Street.
Hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
In addition to the usual recyclables, they'll be accepting lots of other items.
"Paint, chemicals, or just about anything else they got laying around the house that they want to get rid of, they can bring it down" said Bob Ervin with the Environmental Recycling Center.
They'll also be accepting electronics like TVs and computers.
Certain items like large-scale remodeling or construction materials won't be accepted.
"If you tore down your whole privacy fence, we can't take all the old one from you," said Ervin.
For the tire amnesty days, Ervin expects to see between 6,000 and 8,000 tires.
You can bring in as many eight tires without rims for free. You'll need to bring a proof of residency as well, like a current water bill.
Any more than that will require a fee, depending on the size of the tire.
By taking advantage of the tire amnesty, you can help to make sure the tires don't end up in the wrong place.
"A lot of things, especially tires wind up in ditches, in fields, and they become eyesores and they become unsanitary" said Ervin.
