Clyde High School mourns death of junior killed in Wednesday crash

CLYDE, Texas - Clyde High School is mourning the loss of 16-year-old Halston Metheny, who was killed in a two-vehicle accident late Wednesday on the I-20 frontage road near Elmdale Road.

Three other Clyde students – a 17-year-old female, a 15-year-old male and a 15-year-old female – were injured in the crash.

"She (Metheny) had her life in front of her," Clyde High School Principal Terry Phillips said Thursday. "We just saw her yesterday talking and laughing with her friends."

According to Phillips, Metheny – a junior – and the other Clyde students were returning from a Wednesday night youth group at an Abilene church. Sadly, Phillips said, Metheny's mother and younger brother were "two or three cars back" when the crash occurred.

"It is always difficult when a young life is taken so soon," Phillips said.

Meanwhile, Phillips said counselors have been made available and the Clyde High School library has been closed off – for counseling – so that students and faculty can be counseled in the wake of the tragic death.

Some local ministers, Phillips said, have also been on campus.

"For teachers who had her in class yesterday who don't have her in class today, it's difficult," said Phillips, who noted Metheny wasn't involved in athletics but that she had been involved in Clyde's health science program in the past.
