ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Texas-Tyler, losing 9-3 in the first game before winning 8-6 in game two, on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Field.
The Patriots jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Buddy McCoy and Reid Coover had RBI singles, Daniel Stagg had an RBI fielder's choice and Dillon Berry a two-run single to chase HSU starter Brandon Bollinger in the first.
HSU scored a run in the first on a Colson Craddick sacrifice fly and added another in the second on a passed ball.
McCoy had an RBI single in the fourth and Berry an RBI single in the fifth to make it 7-2. HSU scored a run in the fifth on a wild pitch.
The Patriots added single runs in the sixth and seventh and HSU left 12 runners on base, including the bases loaded three times.
McCoy and Berry had three hits each for the Patriots. Patrick Michon earned the win in relief of Jake Beam. He allowed one run over two innings and Joshua Holley worked the final two innings for UTT.
Bollinger took the loss for the Cowboys to fall to 3-4. He allowed five runs in two-thirds of an inning. Matt Rhodes worked six innings in relief and allowed three earned runs and Garrett Reed recorded the final out.
Marcus Uechi and Craddick had two hits each for the Cowboys.
HSU took its turn taking an early advantage in the second game as they scored a run on a throwing error and Brandon Walker had an RBI single in the first.
The Patriots scored three times in the third inning on a McCoy sacrifice fly, a wild pitch and a Coover RBI single.
HSU responded to take the lead with four runs in the third. Walker had a two-run single that got through the centerfielder and went to the wall he ended up on third and three runs ended up scoring on the play. J.T. Thornton followed with an RBI double.
The Patriots added a run in the fifth on a McCoy RBI double and HSU scored two runs on an RBI double by Nathan Gourley and an RBI single by Jason Vause. UTT scored twice in the seventh on a two-run double by Coover.
Blake Northrop ended the eighth inning with a strike out of McCoy with the tying run at second base.
Northrop earned the win with four and two-third innings of two-run relief. Jeremy Hallmark started and worked three innings and Alex Bradley worked an inning and one-third. Northrop is now 3-0 on the year out of the bullpen.
Cason Adams (0-2) took the loss allowing six runs in three innings. Cade Suggs and Tyler Stallings worked in relief for the Patriots.
Walker and Vause had three hits each for the Cowboys in a 14-hit attack. Coover and Logan Tucker had three hits each for UTT.
HSU is now 10-12 on the year and 7-11 in conference play. UTT is 10-15 overall and 8-10 in conference play. HSU hosts No. 2 Trinity at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
